Did Def Leppard’s song “Pour some sugar on me” correctly predict the rose-colored iPhone? No, but one of our staffers and apparent Kyrie Irving super fan, Edward, points to the first set of lyrics in the song as proof the Def Leppard crew called it. Edward’s version of the lyric is:
Love is like a bomb baby c’mon get it on
Livin’ like a lover with a red iPhone
Lookin’ like a tramp, like a video vamp
Demolition woman, can I be your man? (Your man)
You can listen for yourself here on youtube. But clearly, this has to be a misheard lyric. Is it possible Def Leppard in 1987 predicted the iPhone? This newfound clairvoyance would have come three years too late, as they were unable to predict the accident that cost their drummer a good portion of his limbs. There are many ways to disprove the notion, but let us consider the following: The world still had the USSR and the Cold War, the first consumer mobile phone came out in 1983, and Print Shop banners from dot matrix printers were at every event. Apple was hard pushing out Macintosh computers and a rogue Steve Jobs was creating “Next” after being fired from Apple in 1985. Did Steve Jobs share his vision with Robert Lange or the other writers of this prolific song? Probably not. I am not even aware that they would have ever met. Luckily the internet tells us exactly what was published. As far as Edward, the idea of a Radar phone is far more troubling to him.
